I've booked my session, now what on earth do I wear?
Your portrait session is just around the corner and I am so excited to be your photographer! The #1 question the client asks in the days leading up to their session is “what do I wear?”. That is an excellent question! You are the subject of your photographs and you are what will make them beautiful! To ensure that your pictures are exactly what you want them to be – and more! – I am sending you this Portrait Style Guide with some information and tips to help you decide what to wear for your upcoming session!
My hope is that the tips above will offer you support and help alleviate any stress you may feel when planning your outfit for your lifestyle session! My goal is that your time with me, during both the session itself and the communication before and after, will be enjoyable, relaxing, and memorable! With that being said, if at any point you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me!
Thank you again for your business! I am looking so forward to your lifestyle session!
Keep smiling,
Erin
- Comfort: Dress comfortably. If you are uncomfortable, it will show in your photographs. The portrait experience is about more than having your picture taken. It’s about taking 1-2 hours, unplugging, unwinding and spending quality time with your family!
- Color: Choose colors that compliment each other and, most importantly, your skin tone. Color and contrast are excellent ways to bring out your features and skin tone! For example, dark pants and a coordinating dark top draw attention to your face and eyes. Add a light colored scarf and you will be even more eye catching! Don’t be afraid to add a punch of color to your outfit and, in turn pizazz to your images! When choosing your colors, remember bright colors, including reds, oranges, and neon shades, project and reflect. They project, making the subject look larger, and reflect giving you and those around you a tinted glow that takes away from your gorgeous, natural skin tone.
- Coordinate: Go for coordinating colors rather than matching! If you’re having trouble deciding what colors to wear, use your home as inspiration. After all, your photos will more than likely become part of your home décor!
- Patterns & Prints: If floral print is you or you are most comfortable in plaid, go for it! Keep in mind, too much pattern can overwhelm the photo and distract the viewer. As a rule of thumb, use the 4:1 rule – 4 people in solids:1 person in print/pattern for even, eye catching photos!
- Accessorize & Texturize: Ladies, jewelry, scarves, and fun shoes (I think we all have at least one pair) are great examples of ways you can add color and drama to your photos. Gentlemen, wear a wrist watch or a belt, wear a button up, collared shirt or even a tie! Accessories are a great way to add fun details and texture to your photos which gives them even more life!
- From Head… Hats are completely fine! Just make sure I can see your eyes, because they are the #1 feature that makes you you!
- To Toe: What about your feet? Gentlemen, you look most masculine in closed toe shoes. Ladies, here’s your opportunity to break out that pair of heels or funky sandals you’ve been dying to wear! Just remember, go for comfort, comfort, comfort!
- Dress Code: If you’re having trouble deciding how dressy you should look, I recommend dressing as you would for a dinner date with your hubby (and not the Netflix on the couch kind). Life is so busy these days, how often do we get the chance to just dress up and not go to work? Remember, as you dress up, you are also dressing up your photos, which in turn takes your photos to a whole new level of wall art worthy! Dressy casual all the way!
My hope is that the tips above will offer you support and help alleviate any stress you may feel when planning your outfit for your lifestyle session!
